Samsung Galaxy S6 edge survives over 20 minutes under water

Samsung didn't waterproof the new Galaxy S6 and S6 edge like it did with their predecessor. So, what happens if you drop your Galaxy S6 edge in water? TechSmartt decided to find out and dunked the an S6 edge into a bowl of water with the stopwatch running. The phone lasted over 20 minutes before powering off. That's a lot more than can be expected from a phone with no official water resistance rating, but it was not without taking some damage. After some drying and charging the Galaxy S6 edge came back to life, though there was still water in the device (visible in the front-facing camera. The phone also tended to reboot or even not boot at all after the experiment. So, definitely don't go put your Galaxy S6/S6 edge in water on purpose, though it looks like it has a good chance of surviving an accidental drop if you pull it out quickly and dry it properly. Note that depths plays a part, an IPX7 rating for example specifies up to 1m of water. Source |...

Apple planning to release three new iPhones later this year

Apple has built a formidable track record of sticking with pretty much the same release cycle for its iPhone models. Handset releases come a year apart and have mostly been following a "tick-tock" scheme with the S models. Ever since the iPhone 5, we have begun to expect a new iPhone every September and there is no reason to believe the Cupertino tech giant will deviate from this schedule with the next round of smartphones. A new rumor, courtesy of industry inside sources, has come to our attention that might shed some light on the upcoming phones. And, we have to say, it is pretty much what everybody expected. According to the information, Apple is working on two natural successors to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, named iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. But there is still somewhat of a plot twist in the story, as the US company will allegedly be bringing back the infamous C model, in the form of the iPhone 6C. This is quite an odd choice, indeed, seeing how the iPhone 5C was quite a failure and widely regarded as a shameless effort to trick buyers, not to mention an affront to Apple's trademark style. But, perhaps, sales report tell a different story and make the idea of a iPhone 6C a viable market strategy. The rumor goes on to detail that the C model will feature a 4-inch display, which is kind of odd, seeing how the form factor was last seen a generation ago in the iPhone 5c and 5s, so there might still be hope that the 6C is more than a stripped down iPhone 6. The is further proved by the rumor that all three devices will be equipped with LTPS panels, courtesy of Japan Display and LG for the 6S models, as well as Sharp for the 6C. Then again, the two 6S version should be powered by the all new A9 chip, while the rumor states that the 6C will have the A8, found in current models, so things can still go either way for the little handset. We have also heard that the iPhone 6S will pack 2GB of LPDDR4 RAM in a previous rumor. Corning Gorilla Glass, NFC and fingerprint scanning technology will also be found in all of the models. Wistron should be in charge of manufacturing the 6C units and the rest are left to Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and Pegatron. We should note, that the above is a rumor and while it does sound pretty logical and believable, should be taken with a grain of salt, perhaps even a...

Alleged HTC One M9+ press images appear on Twitter

Alleged press renders of the upcoming HTC One M9+ made the rounds on Twitter, courtesy of @upleaks. The high-end smartphone is going to make its official debut next month, on April 8 in Beijing. In line with past leaks, the press images showcase the upcoming handset is a rather eye-catching black/gold color scheme. The latter is not available on the HTC One. Shortly thereafter, @upleaks posted a closeup shot of the area below the display of the smartphone. A homescreen button which is likely a home to a fingerprint sensor splits the BoomSound speaker of the device. The circular camera of the handset should hardly catch anyone by surprise. It has already appeared in live photos. HTC One M9 Plus might debut with two different chipsets - a MediaTek MT6795 model could cater to the Chinese market, while a Snapdragon 810 version will be sold elsewhere. The rest of the device's rumored specs include 5.2" QHD display, fingerprint scanner, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of expandable memory. Source...

New iOS 8.3 beta builds go out to testers and developers

Almost two weeks ago, Apple officially unveiled its consumer-oriented beta program for iOS 8.3. At the same time, it released the first beta build for eager testers, which coincided with the third iOS 8.3 beta release for developers. And today it's time for a new update. A new beta build of iOS 8.3 is now going out to both developers and consumers. For developers, this is the fourth beta of the next iOS release, which might be an indication that we're headed towards the finalization of the build pretty soon. For consumers who are using the Apple Seed program, this is the second beta of iOS 8.3, which will show up for them in Software Update on their devices. The download sizes may be different for each device, but in all cases it looks like we're seeing files above 100MB. iOS 8.3 beta 4 for developers removes the "beta" tag from iCloud Photo Library, but this isn't the first time that this has happened - so it may be back in the future. Additionally, the message filtering feature introduced in an earlier beta has been refined somewhat, with the category for iMessages sent by people who aren't in your contact list having been renamed to "Unknown Senders". Obviously some unnamed bug fixes and performance improvements should be in too, but that's pretty much it for new stuff in this release. Source 1 • Source...

LG G4 will reportedly not feature a metal body

According to a report from Korea, the soon to be revealed LG G4 will not feature a metal body. However, the Korean giant is expected to launch a metal-clad smartphone before the end of this year. The first LG device with metal body will allegedly be the upcoming G4 Note. The previously rumored high-end handset will reportedly compete with the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Apple iPhone 6 Plus when it becomes available. LG G4 will not get the metal treatment due to the costly nature of the switch to CNC equipment. Leaked press renders of the LG G3 successor have all but confirmed that it will feature a polycarbonate body. Source (in Korean) |...

Gionee Elife S7 will be launched in India on April 4

The latest flagship, courtesy of Gionee was unveiled only a few weeks ago at MWC 2015. The Chinese company has really been focusing on its premium Elife series with great phones, such as the Elife S5.5 and Elife S5.1, which even held the title of "world's thinnest smartphone" for a short while. Now Gionee plan to officially launch the latest addition to this lineup - the Elife S7 in India. The event will on April 4 and invitations have already been sent out. Samsung building a foldable phone, LG on transparent screens

Samsung is releasing the occasional flip smartphone, but those are niche products with limited availability and appeal. A Samsung official revealed that the company has a plant to leverage its bendable display technology to create foldable phones. The official did not provide any more info though if a foldable, flip phone like form factor can be used to provide a large screen in a compact body. While that may sound futuristic, we may see it as early as next year. The new flexible screen tech has four phases: curved, bent, foldable and rollable. The first two are already a reality, the third one is coming soon while the last one holds promise of displays that are stored like roller blinds. LG Display has its flexible screens too, though its focus is elsewhere - the company is experimenting with transparent displays. Those will enable augmented reality displays without the need for Google Glass style wearables. LG already has a promotional prototype ready, however, "it will take some time" until the factories are ready for mass production. The tech is already is some products like luxury cars (for heads-up displays) and refrigerators (to let you see what's inside while showing ads too). Anyway, there's one transparent display phone that we can think of, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness. Of course, that one had a tiny, low-res, monochrome display and never drew much attention from consumers. LG is much further ahead than that - the image above is an 18" LG display that's both transparent and bendable. Source |...

Google adds “On-Body detection” feature to Android

Smart-Lock-on-body-detection.jpg

Google has started rolling out a new feature to some Android users that will make it the unlocking of a smartphone very easy. The company is adding “On-Body detection” to Smart Lock.

The On-Body detection feature make it sure that your smartphone remains unlocked when you are holding your device or carrying it with you. It uses your device’s accelerometer to detect whether your device is still being carried on the body. “If your device detects that it’s no longer being held, your device won’t stay unlocked,” reads Google’s note. When you place it on a table or some other surface, it locks your phone again.

The screenshots are apparently from a Nexus 4 running Android 5.0.1 and Google Play Services 7.0.97. The owner says that the feature appeared after performing a factory reset on the device. The device will remain locked when you pick it back up. And if you pass an unlocked phone over to another person it remains unlocked.

Samsung Galaxy S5 getting Lollipop OTA update in India

Samsung had began rolling out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for its Galaxy smartphone lineup. Now the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5 owners in India are getting the Lollipop OTA update. The Exynos powered Galaxy S5 G900H is getting the Lollipop update with system-wide UI tweaks, performance improvements and bug fixes. Of course, the Material design of the Lollipop has been wrapped in TouchWiz layer and hence it would not be a radical change. The OTA update weighs 874.21 MB. Samsung has been seeding the Lollipop update for Snapdragon based S5 and later for Exynos based model since last December, starting with South Korea, then continued to offer it in Poland, Spain, UK, US, and other regions. Thanks for the tip,...

The Top 10 trending phones of week 12

For yet another week, the top trending phones chart has been dominated by Samsung and, more specifically, the company's latest flagship device - the Galaxy S6. The handset has been generating so much attention after its announcement at MWC 2015, that it is dwarfing its contenders in the list with a huge lead of about 40,000 daily hits. Interestingly enough, the remainder of the top three section of the list, has also remained unchanged. The top of the line S6 is followed closely by the premium metal-body Galaxy A7 and the A5. Even the Galaxy Grand prime has managed to hold the forth place it had last week, so Samsung is definitely on a roll lately. There are, however, some interesting rearrangements in the rest of the list. The Galaxy S5 has moved up a place to number 5, coming just ahead of the Asus Zenfone 5. The spike in interest with the Zenfone is much more impressive, though and the phone has skipped from 10th place, all the way to number 6. Interestingly enough, the HTC One M9 interest plummeted down and it's now inching towards the bottom of the chart at number 8. Perhaps, this is due to the recent overheating controversy it was involved in, so HTC has some damage control on its hands to get the flagship back on the road to success. .news-item .n-left { float: left; width: 26%; text-align: center; } .news-item .n-right { float: left; width: 74%; } .news-item a { padding-bottom: 0; padding-left: 0; } .news-item .n-right h2, .reviews-item .n-right h2 { clear: both; padding: 0 0 3px 0px; font: 400 19px Oswald, Arial; margin-top: -4px; } .n-right p { margin-top: 25px; line-height: 155%; } .news-item { padding-top: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; border-top: 1px solid #ccc; } .news-item p { margin-left: 0; } .n-right h2 .phone-name { display: inline-block; width: 252px; overflow: hidden; vertical-align: text-bottom; } .n-right h2 a { text-decoration: none; color: #000; } .flat-button{ text-align:center; text-decoration: none !important; font: 400 22px Oswald,Arial !important; //font-family: sans-serif; -webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; font-size: 150%; //background: #0CADA7; padding: 20px 60px !important; display: inline-block; white-space: nowrap; -webkit-border-radius: 5px; -moz-border-radius: 5px; border-radius: 5px; margin: 10px 0; -webkit-transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; -ms-transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; -moz-transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; -o-transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; transition: all 0.2s ease-in-out; color: #fff !important; } .flat-button-1 { background: #0CADA7; } .flat-button-1:hover { background: #0A948F; color: #666666 !important; } .flat-button-2 { background: #FF7E47; } .flat-button-2:hover { background: #EE7440; color: #666666 !important; } .n-right .rank-info { display: inline-block; font-family: "Oswald",Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-weight: 100; } .n-right .rank-info .current-rank { font-size: 23px; } .circle { background: none repeat scroll 0 0 #8fb28f; border-radius: 50%; height: 23px; width: 23px; display: inline-block; margin: 0px 10px -1px 10px; } .arrow { width: 0; height: 0; border-style: solid; display: inline-block; margin: 0px 10px -1px 10px; } .arrow-up { border-width: 0 15px 25px 15px; border-color: transparent transparent #0cada7 transparent; } .arrow-down { border-width: 25px 15px 0 15px; border-color: #ff7e47 transparent transparent transparent; } Samsung Galaxy S6 RANK: 1WAS: 1 specs review Samsung Galaxy A7 RANK: 2WAS: 2 specs review Samsung Galaxy A5 RANK: 3WAS: 3 specs review Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime RANK: 4WAS: 4 specs review Samsung Galaxy S5 RANK: 5WAS: 6 specs review Asus Zenfone 5 RANK: 6WAS: 10 specs review Apple iPhone 6 RANK: 7WAS: 8 specs review HTC One M9 RANK: 8WAS: 5 specs...

Android 5.1 rolling out to Micromax Canvas A1 in India

Micromax just announced that over the course of a week it will be rolling out the Android 5.1 Lollipop update to its budget-minded Canvas A1 smartphone. The update is being seeded in India, and comes just in time not to break Goolge's promise from a few weeks ago. The update shouldn't surprise anyone as Android One smartphones have since been launched with the latest Android version out of the box in multiple countries. Meanwhile, devices in India have remained on the still prevalent KitKat iteration. The Android 5.1 update brings improvements and bug fixes over the the 5.0 installment in several areas. Most notable to the end user is the return of silent mode, as well as better quick settings implementation for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Native multiple SIM support is brought along and a new security feature locks the phone until you sign in with your Google account, as an added deterrent to phone theft. Source |...

Motorola starts testing Android 5.1 Lollipop for Moto X (2014)

Motorola was prompt in pushing the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to the Moto X (2014) and the Moto X (2013) also got the update earlier this month. Now the company has commenced the soak tests of Android 5.1 Lollipop for the Moto X (2014). The Lollipop version 23.1.28 is being tested out with several improvements such as reducing the noise in low-light shots of the rear camera and more responsive viewfinder of front-facing camera. Device Protection is one important feature that keeps the lost or stolen devices locked even if the factory settings reset is tried and functions only when signed in with actual Google account. Apart from these improvements, there are several under the hood tweaks arriving with this...

Xiaomi to launch a new budget model, will cost more than $65

Xiaomi made a name for itself by offering capable smartphones at affordable prices. The company's current entry-level offering, the Redmi 2, retails for the equivalent of around $110, but Xiaomi is reportedly aiming to beat that. The prominent Chinese manufacturer is working on a new model, and we may have been treated to a live photo of said device. The lone image reveals the back of the smartphone, and one might say that it's identical to the existing Redmi 2. The rumored specs are also quite similar and feature a 4.7-inch 720p display, single gig of RAM and 8GB of built-in storage. An 8MP/2MP camera combo will be in charge of capturing memories, and the phone will boot Android 4.4.4 KitKat. One notable difference is the chipset, where an LC1860C is being used instead of the Snapdragon 410 in the Redmi 2. The said piece of silicon is a product of Leadcore Technology which is a major Chinese manufacturer of application processors. Xiaomi were allegedly targeting a CNY399 price, which translates to the rather extreme $65. At some point along the way however, that was deemed impossible and the smartphone will command a higher price, so expect a number between $65 and the Redmi 2's...

Creating Better User Experiences on Google Play

Whether it's a way to track workouts, chart the nighttime stars, or build a new reality and battle for world domination, Google Play gives developers a platform to create engaging apps and games and build successful businesses. Key to that mission is offering users a positive experience while searching for apps and games on Google Play. Today we have two updates to improve the experience for both developers and users.

A global content rating system based on industry standards

Today we’re introducing a new age-based rating system for apps and games on Google Play. We know that people in different countries have different ideas about what content is appropriate for kids, teens and adults, so today’s announcement will help developers better label their apps for the right audience. Consistent with industry best practices, this change will give developers an easy way to communicate familiar and locally relevant content ratings to their users and help improve app discovery and engagement by letting people choose content that is right for them....

Lollipop for Galaxy A series in the works, no plans for 5.1 just yet

Samsung is reportedly working on the Lollipop updates for all Galaxy A smartphones. The firmwares for the Galaxy A3, Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7 will be based on Android 5.0 Lollipop. There is no word on the Galaxy Alpha - Samsung previously announced it will threat the Alpha with Lollipop early this year, but there is no further info on the matter. Google recently announced Android 5.1 Lollipop - the next Lollipop revision with minor updates and fixes. According to insiders Samsung has made no plans any the 5.1 updates just yet, but that is to be expected as not all Lollipop ROMs are ready to deploy. Also there is a good chance Google details Android 5.2 in a month or two, so it's probably wiser to wait a bit. Speaking of Lollipop updates, those insider sources say there is no news on the Galaxy Note 2 ROM development either, which either means it's been cancelled or will enter development later this...

OnePlus One to be available on Amazon India without invite

The Chinese startup's only existing smartphone model, the OnePlus One, is approaching a year since its announcement, and yet every opportunity to get your hands on one is a newsworthy episode. This time around the smartphone will be available on Amazon India on March 24. No invites will be required, but supplies will be limited, although no specific number has been stated. Both versions will be up for purchase, the 16GB White Silk one costing INR18,999 ($305), while the 64GB Sandstone Black model is priced at INR21,999 ($355). The date coincides with the company's weekly no-invite sale that takes place every Tuesday, and also happens to be the last date, when European prospect buyers will be able to get one at the current prices. Owing to the shaky positions of the Euro on the global markets, starting the following day the price of the 16GB option will be bumped from €269 to €299, while the larger storage model will set you back €349, as opposed to the €299 price tag at the moment.
